Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings spoiled another quality start from P.J. Walters, allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the 8th inning, as the Wings dropped the series opener to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 3-2, Saturday night at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA.
Rochester (17-26) has now dropped 10 of their first 13 series openers this season and 7 of 10 games overall.
After a lead-off, infield single by Jermaine Mitchell in the bottom of the 8th inning, Cesar Hernandez laid down a sacrifice bunt that Wings third baseman Ray Olmedo threw wildly into centerfield, allowing Mitchell to scamper all the way home as the winning run.
The unearned ran came off Caleb Thielbar who saw his season-high 10.1-inning scoreless streak snapped. Thielbar hadn't allowed a run since April 25 at Syracuse.
The IronPigs (18-24) grabbed the early lead in the 3rd inning on Hernandez's RBI double to the left-center field gap scoring Mitchell from second as Lehigh Valley went ahead, 1-0. Michael Martinez's first triple of the year plated Pete Orr in the fifth as Lehigh Valley grabbed a 2-0 lead.
But the Red Wings would respond as Chris Colabello put the Wings on the board in the 6th inning with a two-out RBI single to center scoring Chris Herrmann, who led off the inning with a walk. A batter later, Jeff Clement tied the game with an RBI single past the glove of a diving Hernandez at second base scoring Nate Hanson .
The single for Colabello extended his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games and he has now picked up at least one hit in 19 of his last 20 games. Over that span, the 29-year-old slugger is hitting .395 (32-for-81) with 5 home runs and 16 RBI.
Walters turned in his 6th straight quality start as he allowed just two runs on seven hits in seven innings. Walters didn't factor in the decision but he lowered his ERA to 3.31 on the year and over his last six starts his ERA is just 2.08 (9 ER/39.0 ER).
Kyle Gibson (2-5, 3.92) gets the ball for the Red Wings on Sunday opposite IronPigs LHP Tom Cochran (0-1, 5.65). First pitch from Coca-Cola Park is set for 1:35 p.m. and you can catch all the action with the "Voice of the Wings", Josh Whetzel, on WHTK 1280 AM.
