Louisville Bats News Release
FORT MILL, S.C. - Armando Galarraga (L, 2-2) gave up four runs in the first three innings, and that's all the Knights would need en route to their 4-2 victory.
Galarraga took the mound sporting an outstanding 1.69 ERA, and he's been very consistent for the Bats the season. He would complete six innings of work, but gave up four runs in his first three innings; Galarraga hadn't given up more than two earned runs in any of his outings this season.
All of the scoring in this game was done in the first three innings. The Knights scored a run in the top of the first, with all of the damage being done with two outs. A walk and a single brought Charlotte catcher Josh Phegley to the plate, and that has meant trouble for Bats pitching this series. His single drove in the first run of the game, giving him seven RBIs in the series.
Louisville responded in the top of the second inning with a two-run double by Corky Miller, who got the start at first base tonight. The two runs would be all the Bats could muster against the Knights.
Charlotte took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second on a two run homer by Seth Loman, and added another run in the third on a Lars Anderson single.
Galarraga struggled in the third, but managed to escape trouble in an interesting fashion; a blocked ball in the dirt had runners on first and second trying to advance, but catcher Nevin Ashley was able to throw out the trail runner. In the same at-bat, a ball in the dirt bounced away, but Ashley was able to toss it to Galarraga who covered home plate.
Galarraga would settle down and pitch very well for the remainder of his outing, but it wasn't enough to get the victory.
Knights' starter Tony Pena Jr. (W, 1-3) had early struggles as well, but would give up just two runs in a season-long six innings of work, striking out eight batters.
The Bats lineup was without several regulars including Henry Rodriguez, Neftali Soto, and Mike Hessman, as they were given days off.
Felix Perez had his nine game hitting streak snapped, going 0-for-3. Billy Hamilton went 0-for-3 as well, but did reach base via a walk. However, he did not steal a base for the fourth straight game.
Corky Miller's double moved him within five of Bats' all-time leader Kevin Barker. His 2-for-4 game brought him within 38 hits of first place on the Bats' all-time list.
The Bats head to Gwinnett for a four-game series before returning home on May 23 to face Pawtucket. On the mound for the Bats for game one in Gwinnett will be Greg Reynolds (3-0, 2.92). He will face Braves' lefty Yohan Flande (1-3, 4.95).
