Portland powers past Fisher Cats 15-4

(Manchester, N.H.) - Travis Shaw went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI and Michael Almanzar had a career-high 5 RBI, as they Sea Dogs (23-15) cruised by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (19-22), 15-4 on Thursday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Portland snapped a two-game losing streak and finished the roadtrip at 3-4.
Brandon Workman (5-1) allowed a solo-homer to Kevin Pillar, the first guy he faced, but earned the win with six strong innings of work. The right-hander yielded seven hits, three runs, one walk, while fanning six. Workman became the fifth 5-game winner in the Eastern League.
Portland scored nine runs during innings two-through-four and took a 9-3 lead. A dropped fly ball by left fielder Adam Loewen gave Portland a 2-1 advantage in the second. The 'Dogs scored four times off losing pitcher Ryan Tepera (4-3) in the third. Tony Thomas (3-for-6, RBI) nailed an RBI double and Shaw crushed a two-run homer (#3) to right-center field. With two outs, J.C. Linares reached on an infield single and scored on Shannon Wilkerson's triple.
Kevin Nolan, the native of Nashua, New Hampshire, knocked in two runs with a single in the third, cutting Portland's lead to 6-3. Workman allowed just one hit over the next three innings.
In the fourth, Peter Hissey delivered a sac-fly, Shaw nailed a run-scoring double and Almanzar singled home his first run. Portland scored eight times off Tepera in 3.1 IP on eight hits. Former Sea Dog Chore Spoone relieved Tepera in the fourth, and allowed five hits on four runs over 1.2 IP. Shaw (RBI single) and Almanzar (2-run double) had back-to-back run-scoring hits in the sixth, extending Portland's lead to 12-3.
Almanzar capped off a career-night with a two-run homer in the eighth, his team leading, sixth of the season. Xander Bogaerts added a sac-fly for Portland's final run.
Miguel Celestino pitched the final three innings to earn his first Double-A save. Celestino yielded five hits and one run, a homer to Ryan Schimpf to start the eighth.
Portland had a season-high in runs, hits, extra-base hits (9) and doubles (7).

The Sea Dogs open up a 7-game homestand on Friday night against the Binghamton Mets at Hadlock Field. Right-hander Matt Barnes (3-1, 4.65) makes his eighth start of the season for Portland. Binghamton will have righty Erik Goeddel (3-2, 5.45) on the hill.
