New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - After giving up a three-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, Brad Glenn lofted a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give the Fisher Cats (20-21) a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Portland Sea Dogs (22-15) on Wednesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Their third straight victory sets New Hampshire up for a shot at the series sweep on Thursday.
The winning rally began after the Sea Dogs netted three runs against Joel Carreno (W; 2-1) in the top of the ninth inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch and a bloop single to left field that plated three runs. The rally wiped out a potential win for Deck McGuire, who tossed six strong with 8 strikeouts in the start.
After the Sea Dogs rallied, the bottom of the inning featured a lead-off single from Ricardo Nanita. He was replaced by pinch runner Amadeo Zazueta before Ryan Schimpf drew a walk. After a force play, Glenn stepped up and, after fouling off several two-strike pitches, flew out to the warning track to plate Zazueta for the game-winning run.
New Hampshire built its lead starting in the fifth in the face of a 1-0 deficit against Portland starter Charlie Haeger (ND). Batting in the fifth without a hit, John Tolisano smacked the first pitch of the inning over the right field wall for his third home run to break up the no-hitter and tie the game at 1-1. After a walk to Kevin Pillar, Nanita doubled to right to put New Hampshire on top, 2-1.
An inning later, the Fisher Cats added two more runs against former Red Sox relief pitcher Daniel Bard. The right-hander struggled with his command, issuing the first two of his five walks in the sixth inning. An RBI single from Tolisano scored one run before another crossed on a double-play to push the New Hampshire lead to 4-1.
Tolisano finished the game 2-4 with his first home run since he smacked a pair during the first homestand of the season in early April. Nanita added two hits, but the story of the game for the New Hampshire offense was its patience. Fisher Cats hitters tied a franchise record by drawing 13 walks, including a record-breaking five by Schimpf.
The Fisher Cats have now tied a season-high with their third straight win entering the finale on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The game will feature a post-game Atlas Fireworks show. Tickets are available at the Fisher Cats' ticket office, by calling 603-641-2005, or by visiting www.nhfishercats.com.
The pitching match-up for the finale features Ryan Tepera (4-2, 2.65) against Portland's Brandon Workman (4-1, 3.54). Coverage with Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman begins at 6:45 PM on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and online at www.nhfishercats.com.
