Hagerstown Suns News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Hagerstown Suns (22-14) won their fifth consecutive series by defeating the Greensboro Grasshoppers (16-22) on Wednesday 6-0. It was the sixth shutout win for the Suns this season, and improves Hagerstown's road record to 13-7.
It wasn't until the seventh inning that Hagerstown was able to break the scoreless tie. With one out in the frame, CF Will Piwnica-Worms hit a line drive single to left field. Left fielder Wes Schill then walked, and that was followed by a double off the bat of SS Stephen Perez, which allowed both Piwnica-Worms and Schill to score. Catcher Erick Fernandez then sent a double to center field, driving in Perez to make it 3-0.
The Suns tacked on another run in the eighth thanks to one swing of the bat by 1B Shawn Pleffner. Pleffner sent a ball sailing over the left field wall with one out for his second homerun of the season. It was the 19th homerun hit by Hagerstown this season, and the fourth in the three-game series with Greensboro.
The final two Suns runs came in the ninth. Perez began the inning by hitting a double to left. Fernandez then singled to left, advancing Perez to third. Perez scored when 2B Hunter Bailey grounded into a force out at second. Three batters later Pleffner drove in Bailey from second with a single up the middle.
RHP David Fischer (1-0) earned the win for Hagerstown. He pitched three innings of relief, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out two. RHP Brian Ellington (1-1) suffered the loss for the Grasshoppers. He threw 1.1 innings of relief, giving up three earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one.
The Suns next head to Kannapolis, NC on Thursday May 16 to begin a four game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators. Hagerstown will send LHP Kylin Turnbull (2-1) to the mound for his fourth start of the season. He will square off against RHP Brandon Brennan (1-5) for the Intimidators. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
