Walker & Lee Lead Kernels over Bees

May 14, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - A late-inning rally attempt by the Burlington Bees was all for not as Adam Brett Walker's grand slam in the 6th paced the Kernels on their way to a 5-4 win on Tuesday night.

The victory marked a series-opening win for the Kernels (25-11), who play the Bees and Kane County Cougars at Perfect Game Field this week. Manager Jake Mauer's squad was on the road for two weeks, last playing in its own confines on April 30.

The Kernels' breakout 6th inning was aided greatly by some control issues from Bees starter Ryan Crowley, a former Kernel. Crowley - who had just 2 walks to his name entering the contest - yielded 3 free passes in the frame, with 2 of those coming around to score on the Walker grand slam.

Walker's homer is his third grand slam of the season, and he is 5-for-6 overall with the bases loaded. The Milwaukee, Wisc., native now has 10 home runs and 44 RBI on the season, which are both tops in the Midwest League.

In the bottom of the 7th, center fielder Byron Buxton hit a towering fly ball to his counterpart in center, Chevy Clarke, Clarke dropped it, and Buxton sped around the diamond to score to give the Kernels a 5-2 lead. The play was ruled a 4-base error on Clarke. Buxton added on to his league-leading run total, which is now 39.

Burlington tacked on 2 runs in the top of the 9th after a pair of singles by Wade Hinkle and Pedro Toribio, but Mike Bolaski struck out to end the game.

Kernels starter Brett Lee (3-2) threw 7 innings, yielding 2 unearned runs on 8 hits while striking out 10. The southpaw lowered his ERA to 2.27. Manuel Soliman relieved Lee, but got into a jam and was replaced by David Hurlbut in the 9th to squash the Bees' rally attempt. Hurlbut now has 3 saves.

Crowley (2-1) exited for the Bees in the 6th, and his final line consisted of 5.2 IP, 4 hits, 4 earned runs, 3 walks, and he struck out 3.
