Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Johnny Cueto fired five scoreless innings on a Major League injury rehabilitation assignment and the Dayton Dragons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-2 on Tuesday night. Cueto earned the win in his second rehab start in Dayton as prepares for his return to the Reds.
Cueto allowed three hits and no walks while striking out four. West Michigan advanced one runner as far as second base against Cueto, getting back-to-back singles in the second inning, but Cueto induced a ground ball double play to end the threat.
Cueto completed his outing after five innings, then threw about 30 more pitches in the Dayton bullpen to end his night.
The Dragons broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when Robert Ramirez lined a solo home run to right field, his second of the year. They added two more in the sixth when Jesse Winker connected on a solo shot to right, his fourth home run of the year. Three batters later, Joe Hudson singled in Seth Mejias-Brean from second base to make it 3-0.
The Dragons scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to pad their lead. Hudson, Tanner Rahier, and Beau Amaral each delivered run-scoring singles in the inning to give the Dragons a 6-0 lead going to the ninth. West Michigan loaded the bases with no one out in the ninth and plated two runs before Ben Klimesh was summoned from the bullpen to strike out Jared Reaves to end the game.
The Dragons collected 13 hits. Amaral, Winker, Mejias-Brean, and Ramirez each had two. Winker raised his batting average to .303 in the process and Amaral extended his hitting streak to seven straight games.
Jesus Adames entered the game to replace Cueto in the sixth and worked two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with one strikeout. Sean Lucas pitched a scoreless eighth, striking out three in the inning, but ran into problems in the ninth when he allowed two hits, two walks and two runs. Klimesh retired the only batter he faced for his second save.
The Dragons improved to 13-24 on the season with the win while West Michigan dropped to 15-21. The Dragons are 3-4 on their current nine-game home stand.
The Dragons and Whitecaps meet in game two of the series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Ismael Guillon (1-4, 9.89) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Endrys Briceno (0-3, 6.40). The series concludes on Thursday at 7:05.
