Late Comeback Lifts B-Mets to 7-3 Win over Aeros

Binghamton, NY- For the second straight night, the Binghamton Mets were undaunted by an early Akron Aeros lead.
After coming back from an early 3-0 deficit, the B-Mets took advantage of four walks and a pair of infield hits during a four-run eighth inning, and beat the Aeros, 7-3, at NYSEG Stadium.
The Aeros (19-20) have lost both games of the series, and will look to avoid the sweep in the series and road trip wrap-up Wednesday night at 6:35. They also squandered a 2-0 lead in the series opener on Monday.
With the score tied at 3-3, the B-Mets capitalized on control problems and wildness by Aeros righthander Trey Haley (1-1). With one out, Haley walked the bases loaded, and then surrendered back-to-back infield hits to Allan Dykstra and Cory Vaughn to give the B-Mets a 5-3 lead. Haley, who hadn't given up a run in his first seven relief outings with Akron, then uncorked a wild pitch to make it 6-3, before leaving in favor of righty Bryan Price.
Inheriting a bases-loaded situation, Price also issued a wild pitch to allow another run to score and make it 7-3, Mets. All told, nine batters came to the plate in the inning.
Lefty Jack Leathersich (1-0) closed the game with two shutout innings for Binghamton to earn his first Double-A win. He picked up for starter Logan Verrett, who scattered five hits and three runs through the first seven innings.
Akron notched two runs in the first off Verrett, who was making his third start of the season against the Aeros. Tyler Holt tripled to center, and Carlos Moncrief walked and stole second. Chun Chen then laced a base hit up the middle to drive in both runners.
In the fifth, Kyle Bellows hit a first-pitch, lead-off homer to make it 3-0. It was Bellows' first of the season.
Binghamton tied the game at 3-3, in the bottom of the fifth against Paolo Espino. Wilfredo Tovar stroked an RBI single and Daniel Muno a two-run double to erase the Aeros lead. Both hits came after two were out.
Espino has seven no-decisions in his eight starts this year. This was his fourth attempt to set the new Aeros career record for wins by a pitcher. He is currently tied with former hurler Jamie Brown with 23 career Akron victories. He lasted through six innings on Tuesday, giving up just the three runs on five hits, with one walk and six strikeouts.
Giovanny Urshela was 1-4, with a single in his first at-bat. That hit extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games.
The Aeros and Mets (21-18) will play the final game of the series and road trip Wednesday evening at 6:35. RHP Jordan Cooper (1-0, 1.93) will start for Akron, while RHP Jacob deGrom (0-4, 5.10) will make the start for the B-Mets.
