Trenton Thunder News Release
(Altoona, PA) - Four Altoona pitchers combined to limit Trenton to five hits and the Curve struck early against Zach Nuding en route to a 5-3 win over the Thunder in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night at People's Natural Gas Field. Altoona scored four times in the first three innings against Nuding (1-5) in a game played with on-and-off rain with temperatures in the mid-40s.
The Curve collected 19 baserunners in eight times at bat (nine hits, nine walks and one error), but Trenton pitching helped limit the damage by stranding 14 on base. Luis Sanz (2-1) started for Altoona and allowed two runs in 5.2 innings pitched, at one point retiring 13 straight Thunder batters.
Trenton took an early 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the second against Sanz. The first came on Slade Heathcott's RBI single and the second scored on a groundout by Ali Castillo. Sanz settled down thereafter and Altoona would allow only two hits the remainder of the game.
Andy Vasquez's RBI triple in the bottom of the second tied the score against Nuding, who then allowed a two-run hit to Mel Rojas, Jr. in the third to put the Curve ahead to stay. Nuding allowed four runs (earned) on eight hits and five walks in four innings.
Carlos Paulino's bases-loaded walk against Danny Burawa in the sixth pushed the Altoona lead to 5-3, snapping a stretch of 13 consecutive scoreless innings pitched for the right-hander. Tyler Austin looped an RBI single in the eighth for Trenton to complete the scoring.
Jason Townsend recorded his second save of the season by pitching a perfect top of the ninth. Austin collected two of Trenton's five hits, while Paulino and Charlie Cutler each reached base four times for the Curve.
Game two of the series will be played Wednesday night, with right-hander Mikey O'Brien (1-0, 0.00) expected to start for the Thunder while the Curve counter with righty Stolmy Pimentel (2-0, 1.99). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR), 1490 AM (WBCB) and also streaming online begins at 6:15 pm.
