Brevard County Manatees News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Strong pitching performances from St. Lucie's Matt Bowman and T.J. Chism kept the Brevard County Manatees off the base paths and off the board, as they combined to hold the 'Tees to just one hit and one walk in a 4-0 loss to the Mets on Tuesday afternoon at Tradition Field.
St. Lucie jumped on the 'Tees (19-18) early as each of the first three batters in the bottom of the first inning reached on hits for the Mets (23-13). T.J. Rivera's leadoff single was followed by a Matt Reynolds double, which was then followed by a two-run single from Brandon Hicks.
Chadwin Stang recorded the only hit for the Manatees (19-18) in the bottom of the third.
Again in the third, the top half of St. Lucie's order did the damage with Rivera reaching on an error. Hicks then doubled to set up the same situation that St. Lucie had in the first, with Dustin Lawley driving in two on a double to make it 4-0.
Manatees' starter Drew Gagnon (3-3, 5.45) was charged with all four runs - three of them earned - as he scattered six hits in four innings. He did not walk a batter and recorded six strikeouts. Gagnon has struck out at least six hitters in his last three starts and has fanned at least five in each of his last six outings.
Brevard County's bullpen kept the Manatees in the game the rest of the way as Chad Pierce and Kevin Shackelford combine to throw four scoreless innings. Pierce threw three of those frames and allowed one hit, while striking out four. Shackelford was perfect in the eighth inning.
Matt Bowman earned the victory for the Mets, by tossing seven shutout frames, surrendering both the hit and the walk with nine strikeouts. T.J. Chism finished the contest with two perfect innings, sitting three batters down on strikes.
The shutout loss was the third of the season for Brevard County and the first for the Manatees since April 7 against Daytona. St. Lucie leads the Florida State League with six shutouts.
Both teams return to Space Coast Stadium for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday. David Goforth (2-4, 3.41) and lefty Alex Panteliodis (0-0, 2.70) will represent the Manatees and Mets on the mound, respectively.
