Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans are invited to join an historic week-long relay run this June, CFL football in hand, that will culminate in a memory-filled journey past the former sites of Osborne Stadium and Canad Inns Stadium before entering Investors Group Field to the cheers of the inaugural crowd.
"It'll be a proud moment for us all to see this ball, touched by so many fans, make its way to centre field as an important part of the June 27th Opening Ceremonies," said Kickoff Run Ambassador, Doug Brown. "The opening of Investors Group Field will be a landmark day for football fans and the community alike and I am excited to be a part of this new era in Blue Bomber football," he said.
The Kickoff Run will get underway on Saturday, June 22nd and will feature a convoy of volunteers and Blue Bomber alumni who will escort the Kickoff football and the Grey Cup as they make their way through the following communities, where photo opportunities will be available for fans:
Saturday, June 22nd - Portage la Prairie
Sunday, June 23rd - Brandon
Monday, June 24th - Morden, Winkler and Altona
Tuesday, June 25th - Steinbach
Wednesday, June 26th - Gimli then Selkirk
Thursday, June 27th - Winnipeg
Coordinated by volunteers in each community, the relay runners will be chosen through contests sponsored by Tim Hortons as well as local print and radio sponsors.
"We invite fans to get involved in the celebration," said Brown, "by joining us at stops along the way where they can enjoy complimentary Tim Hortons coffee and donuts, get a picture taken with the Grey Cup or cheer on runners."
In total, 300 runners will be selected from all contest opportunities with entry details announced starting on May 21st in the Winnipeg Free Press where fans can enter online at www.winnipegfreepress.com/contests.
Fans are also invited to enter by dropping off a ballot at any Tim Hortons location or by tuning into radio partners at Golden West Radio, Westman Communications or CJOB/Power 97 for all details.
Once all runners have been selected, the Final 20 will be chosen to participate in the Opening Ceremonies when the ball will be run to centre field by a surprise guest.
