Reading Fightin Phils News Release
READING, Pa.---Akron Aeros hitters scored a combined three runs between the ninth and tenth innings against the Reading Fightin Phils bullpen to defeat the Fightin Phils, 7-6, in an extra-innings game Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Through nine innings, Fightins hitters put up seven runs and held a two-run lead over the Aeros. After pitching a scoreless eighth inning, reliever Kyle Simon came back out for the ninth inning, but didn't fare as well as he did in the first half of his appearance. The Arizona product gave up a leadoff single to Giovanny Urshela. Urshela then scored after Simon hit Tyler Holt with a pitch and threw consecutive wild pitches. With Holt now on third base, Jesus Aguilar singled to drive the centerfielder in for the game-tying run.
Urshela struck again in the tenth inning after he drove in Quincy Latimore on a double off Colby Shreve for the game-winning run.
Reliever-turned-starter Hector Neris was solid in his fifth start of the season. The Dominican hurler held Akron scoreless through the first three innings before giving up a home run to Aguilar and a Roberto Perez RBI single in the fourth inning. In the next two frames, Neris allowed a run in each inning with his final run coming in the sixth inning after he allowed two baserunners with no outs. Reliever Juan Sosa replaced Neris and yielded a run to Aguilar.
The Fightins bats weren't silent throughout the game. Tyson Gillies hit from the leadoff position in the lineup and had a productive day after going 3-for-5 with a two-run single and run scored. A Reading veteran, Gillies lifted his batting average over 70 points. Fellow outfielder Derrick Mitchell, who was 2-for-5, also hit his fourth home run in the last six games
In addition to Gillies and Mitchell, three Fightins hitters had multi-hit games. Edgar Duran, Sebastian Valle, and Miguel Abreu each had two hits. The team's 13 hits are one shy of the season-high last accomplished on April 16 at Harrisburg.
Reading embarks on a three-game road trip to Erie. RHP David Buchanan (1-4, 6.46 ERA) will start for the Fightins against RHP Patrick Cooper (1-3, 5.23 ERA) of the SeaWolves. Tune into Oldies 1340 WRAW-AM or MiLB.TV for the game broadcast with Fightins play-by-play announcer Anthony Oppermann starting at 6:05 p.m.
Fightins Fillers: The Fightins drop to 8-7 in games decided by one-run or less this season after the afternoon's loss...Prior to the game, Tyler Henson was placed on the 7-Day D.L. with a hamstring strain. In his place, the Phillies signed former
Texas prospect Tommy Mendonca. Mendonca was 1-for-4 with a walk on Sunday.
The Fightin Phils continue their 47th season affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies at FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday, May 17 when the team takes on the Harrisburg Senators at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the 2013 season can be purchased online at Fightins.com, by phone at 610-370-BALL, or in-person by visiting the FirstEnergy Stadium Ticket Office.
