Aeros Settle for Split with Phils
May 11, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Reading, PA - The Akron Aeros and Reading Fightin Phils split a pair of games Saturday at First Energy Stadium in Reading.
The Aeros (18-18) won the completion of the suspended game from Friday night, 4-3, on Roberto Perez's solo homer in the top of the ninth inning. Perez launched a solo shot to left off Tyler Knigge (1-2) with two outs and no one on base. It was Perez's second of the year.
Bryan Price (1-0) earned the win in relief for Akron with two perfect innings to finish the game. Price has thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings since joining the Aeros on April 21st.
In the regularly scheduled game, the Aeros squandered a 4-0 lead, and fell 7-5, snapping a three-game winning streak.
The Aeros jumped on the board quickly, getting an RBI single from Chun Chen and a three-run homer from Quincy Latimore in the first inning off Reading lefty Greg Smith.
The Phils (14-20) came off the mat against Will Roberts (1-2), using the long ball to get back into the game. Miguel Abreu slugged a solo shot in the second inning to make it 4-2.
After Kyle Bellows' RBI double in the fifth made it 5-2, the Phils tied it in the sixth on a solo shot by Derek Mitchell and a two-run homer by Cameron Rupp. For Rupp, it was his third homer of the series.
Reading kept the momentum going in the seventh, and took a 6-5 lead against Roberts, although this time the Aeros helped with a pair of errors. Abreu had an infield single to third, but went to second on Bellows' throwing error. Abreu advanced to third on a ground out, and then scored when Bellows threw high to the plate after fielding a slow roller off the bat of Albert Cartwright.
For insurance, Jim Murphy homered to center off Cole Cook in the eighth, the fourth of the night for the Phils. Jay Johnson closed the ninth with a perfect inning for his second save.
Smith (1-1), a former starter in the majors with Colorado and Oakland, settled down after the rocky first and worked seven innings to earn his first win.
The Aeros and Fightin' Phils will wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:35. RHP Brett Brach (1-2, 3.12) will start for Akron, while RHP Hector Neris (3-1, 3.41) will make the start for Reading. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
