Martinson Overshadows Curley, Beats Dash

Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Moments after Chris Curley's two-run blast tied the game, Jason Martinson propelled the Potomac Nationals to a 5-4 victory with a walk-off homer to lead off the home half of the ninth.

With two outs and the bases empty in a 4-2 game, Joey DeMichele drew a walk to keep the Dash (16-17) alive in the ninth. On the first pitch of his at-bat, Curley clubbed a home run beyond the 400-foot sign in dead center field for his seventh homer of the season.

However, Curley's long ball simply delayed the inevitable. Martinson served the third pitch of the last of the ninth from Max Peterson (0-3) beyond the boards in right to give the P-Nats their third walk-off victory of 2013.

With the game tied at one apiece in the bottom of the sixth, Michael Taylor clubbed a two-run blast off the left field foul pole to give the Nationals the lead for good.

Winston-Salem did get a run back in the top of the seventh. Yoandy Barraso tripled with one out, and DeMichele drove him home with a two-run double.

Potomac plated the game's first run in the bottom of the second thanks to a throwing error, but Winston-Salem responded in the top of the fourth. Kevan Smith led off with a triple off the wall in right, and Mark Haddow chased him home with a sacrifice fly to knot the score.

The Nationals' early unearned tally was the only that Dash starter Chris Bassitt surrendered in his five innings of work. Bassitt scattered seven hits and three walks while stranding nine runners, seven of whom were in scoring position at the end of an inning. In his last five starts, Bassitt is 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA, but he settled for a no decision Friday.

Both teams struggled to take advantage of opportunities throughout the contest. After hitting .432 with men in scoring position during the recent five-game homestand, Winston mustered only one hit in nine such chances. Potomac was 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Winston-Salem and Potomac continue their wraparound four-game series Saturday night at 6:35. The Dash send Chris Beck (2-4, 1.50 ERA), who paces all active Carolina League hurlers in ERA, against fellow right-hander Taylor Hill (3-1, 2.21 ERA). Pregame coverage on wsdash.com begins at 6:20.

The Dash expect to reach their one millionth fan at BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, May 16. On the night the Dash reach this milestone, one fan will have a chance to win one million dollars. Visit wsdash.com to purchase tickets for this historic event.
