Andriese Shuts Down Hounds
Published on May 10, 2013 under Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release
The first time the RockHounds faced San Antonio's Matt Andriese, they scored five runs on six hits over 5.0 innings against the Mission's right-hander ... an earned run average of 9.00.
In his other five starts, Andriese was 4-0, with 1.04 ERA. This time around he dominated the game, allowing one run on five hits over 6.0 innings of work. Backed by another strong performance from the bullpen, Andriese won his fifth game of the season as San Antonio edged the 'Hounds, 2-1, Thursday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
Sean Murphy also turned in a strong performance, allowing two runs on seven hits over 5.2 for the 'Hounds. Kalian Sams' two-run double in the third would drive home the Missions' only runs.
Three of the RockHounds' five hits came off the bat of Anthony Aliotti. The Texas League's leading hitter raised his average to .378 with a pair of singles and a towering home run, a drive that cleared the scoreboard in right field (something that doesn't occur very often in the heavy air at Nelson Wolff Stadium).
The 'Hounds had one other scoring chance against Andriese, with back-to-back singles from Darwin Perez and Aliotti putting two on with no outs in the fourth. But Andriese got Jake Goebbert to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, and the threat went by the boards.
South Division
Frisco defeated Corpus Christi, 6-4, tightening the division up. The Hooks (19-14) lead the RoughRiders by one game, San Antonio by two and the 'Hounds by three.
Kibbles & Bits
- Anthony Aliotti has hit in six straight games, going 13-for-23 (.565) with four doubles, one home run, five runs, five RBI and three walks (on-base in 16-of-25 plate appearances).
- Jeremy Barfield has been promoted to the (Triple-A) Sacramento RiverCats. "Bar" homered in each of his last three games prior to the call-up, finishing at .242 with eight home runs and 18 RBI. He leads the RockHounds in both categories and stands third in the league in HR.
- The RockHounds have placed corner man Jefry Marte on the DL with a right calf strain suffered May 3. To fill the roster spots vacated by Barfield's promotion and Marte's injury, the 'Hounds have activated (catcher) Ryan Lipkin and (infielder) Michael Fabiaschi.
- Brett Anderson is scheduled to make a re-hab start for the RockHounds on Sunday (at San Antonio). The Oakland A's left-hander was a member of the 2008 RockHounds and was born in Midland (during the time his dad, Frank, was coaching at Howard College in Big Spring).
- The RockHounds and Missions meet Friday and Saturday evenings (7:05) and Sunday afternoon (2:05) to complete the series. The 'Hounds then travel on to Frisco for a four-game set with the RoughRiders (Monday-Thursday) at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
