San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio rode the right arm of starter Matt Andriese to a 2-1, series-opening, victory over Midland Thursday night at Wolff Stadium.
With offense at a premium Thursday night, the Missions needed another clutch performance from Andriese, who was looking to become the Texas League's first five-game winner.
The Redlands, CA native mowed through the 'Hounds lineup over the first three innings, allowing just an Anthony Aliotti single in the first.
In the bottom of third, San Antonio gave their starter all the runs he would need. Rico Noel began the rally with a one-out, bunt single. After an Everett Williams walk and a Noel steal put runners on the corners, designated hitter Kalian Sams brought them both home with a double to right.
Andriese's only mistake came in the sixth, when he gave up a two-out, solo homer to Aliotti, who finished with three hits on the night. Andriese (5-0) avoided further trouble by getting an inning-ending line out off the bat of Jake Goebbert. It was the second time this season that the 23-year old tossed six innings. In his five starts this season at home, Andriese is 4-0 with a minuscule 0.67 ERA (2 ER in 27 IP).
The Missions bullpen of Jeremy McBryde, Matt Stites, Kevin Quackenbush (4th save) finished off the win with three hitless innings, combining to throw just 21 pitches.
The series will resume Friday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch on Paul Konerko Missions Replica Jersey Night presented by McCombs Ford West. RH Keyvius Sampson (0-2, 4.15) will get the ball for San Antonio (17-16), while Midland (16-17) will counter with Josh Bowman (2-1, 5.02).
Notes: Tonight was already the fifth one-run contest out of nine overall between the two clubs this season. With the win tonight, the Missions are 4-1 in those contests and 5-4 overall against the RockHounds.
