Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA - The Rawhide took the first game of the double-header in thrilling walk-off fashion by a score of 9-7, before seeing their home win streak snapped at 15 games in a 5-3 loss in the second game. Sean Jamieson was the hero in game 1, hitting a walk off grand slam to erase a two-run deficit. Jake Lamb had the same opportunity in the bottom of the 7th in game 2, as he represented the winning run with two on and two out, but struck out looking on a close full count pitch.
Things got off on the right foot in Game 1 of Thursday's double-header. For the first time in over a week, it was the Rawhide who would get on the board first, and they did not waste a whole lot of time doing so. Mavericks starter loaded the bases on two hits and a hit batsman before giving up a flare single to Michael Perez, plating two runs.
Two batters later, Sean Jamieson hit a grounder to the third baseman Dillon Hazlett with two outs, but an errant throw from Hazlett allowed Ryan Court to come home and score, keeping the rally alive. Kerry Jenkins would make the Mavericks pay with an RBI-single to left, capping the rally and giving the Rawhide an early 4-0 lead.
High Desert used the solo homerun to get back in the ballgame, as their first three hits were solo shots to cut the lead to 4-3. Hessler walked three batters in a row with two outs in the top of the 5th inning to let the tying run come across.
Reliever Willy Paredes would come into the game and not fare any better against Jabari Blash, walking him to bring in the go-ahead run for the Mavericks, making it 5-4 after the top of the 5th.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, it would be the Mavericks who got sloppy. With runners at the corners, a fastball tipped off the glove of the catcher Steven Baron which rolled to the backstop, allowing Jamieson to come home and tie the game at 5-5.
But Willy Paredes (W, 2-1) continued to be eratic with his pitches in the top of the 7th, as he let the first two batters reach via base on balls, and Jabari Blash singled to bring home Anthony Phillips for the go-ahead run. Sean Jamieson then failed to handle a tailor-made double play ball, allowing Choi to come home, giving the Mavericks a 7-5 lead.
The Rawhide refused to let the home winning streak get snapped in the bottom of the 7th. Visalia loaded the bases without recording an out, but Perez struck out and Belza flied out to shallow left to bring Sean Jamieson to the plate. Jamieson came through in the clutch and blasted a low fastball to deep left off Stephen Shackleford (L, 1-2) for a walk off grand slam to end game 1 and give the Rawhide a 9-7 victory.
In game 2, it would be High Desert who got on the board in the 1st inning. Li-Man Choi got a two out rally started with a double to center field, just out of the reach of a diving Evan Marzilli. Sean Jamieson was unable to make a good enough throw over to first on a groundball from Paolini, keeping the inning alive. Two batters later, Michael Dowd hit a 2-RBI single to left to give the Mavericks an early 2-0 lead.
Chris Taylor hit a two-run homer in the top of the 2nd off spot starter Robert Coe, extending the Mavericks lead to 4-0.
The Rawhide put together their own 2-out rally in the bottom of the 2nd. After an RBI-single from Raul Navarro, David Nick tripled to deep right-center to bring in two runs and cut the deficit to 1.
Anthony Phillips padded the lead for the Mavs, hitting a solo homer in the top of the 7th inning to provide the final score of 5-3.
The loss snapped the 15-game home winning streak for the Rawhide, possibly the longest such streak in California League history. The Rawhide travel to Inland Empire tomorrow for the start of a four-game road trip before returning home next Wednesday to face Lancaster.
