Carolina Mudcats News Release
Salem, Va. - The Carolina Mudcats received the clutch hits they had been searching for, and the bullpen held the Salem Red Sox at bay in a doubleheader sweep on Thursday night at LewisGale Field. The Mudcats snapped a five-game losing skid with a 2-1 triumph in game one, and pulled away for a game two victory, 4-1.
The Mudcats (13-20) received stellar performances from their bullpen in game two to earn the sweep. Rob Nixon got the start, and held the Sox (15-16) to a run on three hits over three innings before giving way to Grant Sides.
Sides (2-0) was awarded the win after two scoreless frames thanks to the Carolina offense. After working through four innings tied 1-1, the Mudcats busted loose. Yhoxian Medina and Francisco Lindor drew walks to start the rally.
Salem pulled starter Heri Quevedo (0-2) in favor of Mike McCarthy, but the right-hander promptly surrendered a single to Jerrud Sabourin, scoring Medina for a 2-1 lead. Jordan Smith followed with a double into the right field corner. Lindor scored on the hit, but Sabourin was thrown out trying to score as Smith made it to third.
Charlie Valerio kept the barrage going with a double to straightaway center. Smith trotted home for a 4-1 lead, and the Mudcats cruised from there.
Enosil Tejeda took over for Sides in the sixth, and held Salem scoreless the final two innings for his second save.
Lindor was the difference in game one. With the scored tied 1-1, Tyler Naquin walked, and stole second to move into scoring position. Lindor worked the count full, and singled to right field. Naquin scored on the hit for the deciding run.
Cody Anderson (4-1) picked up the win in the first game by hurling six innings. He allowed one run on six hits in the quality start, striking out five without a walk. J.D. Reichenbach pitched a scoreless seventh for his first save.
The loss went to Nate Striz (0-2) in relief for Salem.
