Normal CornBelters News Release

Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, used two home runs and solid pitching to gain a 5-0 exhibition win over the Joliet Slammers on Thursday at the Corn Crib before 3,344 fans on "Education Day." The CornBelters will play their first regular season home game of the 2013 season at The Corn Crib on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. versus the Windy City Thunderbolts (CEFCU Opening Night).

The Belters opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-run homer to right by Steven Felix while a solo blast to right by David Medina gave the hosts a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning. The CornBelters added the final runs in the eighth inning when Matt Wright reached via walk and Gibby Briones singled, with both scoring on a Jenzen Torres base hit and a wild pitch respectively.

CornBelters pitchers Drew Provence, Josh Joseph, Kyle DiMartino and Casey Upperman split mound duties as Joseph recorded the win and DiMartino gave up the only two Slammers hits, one each in the sixth and seventh frames. Joliet starter Jonathan Gonzalez recorded the loss.

THE NIBLET : The CornBelters are still seeking host families for the 2013 season. The "Host Family Program" provides players with a home away from home. It enables them to live with a family, couple or individual in the Bloomington-Normal area. It is derived from a variety of factors from a player's standpoint. Such factors include: the difficulty in finding a lease for just several months, the possibility of playing for the CornBelters for a limited time and/or the limited salaries that accompany professional baseball at this level of play.
