
RailCats Take Exhibition Opener from Boomers

Schaumburg, Ill. - Drew Martinez and Danny Pulfer had two hits apiece and the RailCats pitching staff held Schaumburg to four hits as the RailCats defeated the Boomers 4-1 in their exhibition opener on Tuesday morning.
The RailCats fell behind 1-0 in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Eric Barnes. RailCats left-handed starter Ari Ronick exited after three innings, giving up a run on two hits with five strikeouts.
Gary was held scoreless through the first five innings, but scored in the sixth when Steve Liddle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. The 'Cats took the lead in the seventh when Martinez reached on an error, scoring Chase Tucker to give the RailCats a 2-1 advantage.
Martinez gave the RailCats breathing room with a two-run single in the ninth to make it 4-1.
Taylor Sewitt pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the RailCats, allowing one hit and striking out two. Estevan Uriegas earned the victory with 1 2/3 scoreless frames with one hit and one strikeout. Morgan Coombs threw the final 1 2/3 innings for the save, did not allow a hit and struck out three.
The RailCats will play their first home exhibition game at U. S. Steel Yard on Wednesday at 4:10 p.m. against the Frontier League's Evansville Otters.
