Portland Thorns FC News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Riding a three-game unbeaten streak to start the inaugural National Women's Soccer League season, Portland Thorns FC continue their three-game road trip on Saturday against the Washington Spirit at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.; kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. (Pacific). Fans can follow the action via a live web stream on www.portlandthornsfc.com.

Thorns FC (2-0-1, 7pts) rank first overall in the league standings through three games and lead the league with five total goals. Portland has conceded just two goals this season and recorded its first shutout in a 2-0 road win against the Chicago Red Stars on April 27 at Benedictine Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.

Christine Sinclair (2 goals, 1 assist), who shares the league-lead in scoring (5 points), registered her second goal of the season against Chicago, while forward Danielle Foxhoven became the team's first player to record a goal after entering the match as a substitute. Foxhoven entered the game against the Red Stars in the 54th minute and tallied the go-ahead goal for Thorns FC in the 70th minute, knocking in a rebound after forward Alex Morgan's initial shot attempt was saved. Sinclair provided an insurance goal for Thorns FC in the 81st minute after finding space near the top of the box and firing a well-placed strike inside the right post.

Thorns FC have received goals from league-high four players this season, led by Sinclair's team-high two goals. Morgan, Foxhoven and defender Marian Doughtery have also registered goals for Portland.

The Washington Spirit (0-2-1, 2pts) have faced an up-and-down start to the season, earning two draws and a loss. Led by midfielder Diana Matheson's two goals, the Spirit conceded a stoppage-time equalizer in a 1-1 season-opening draw against the Boston Breakers on April 14 and earned a come-from-behind 1-1 draw April 20 against the Western New York Flash as Matheson tallied the game-tying goal in the 87th minute in Washington's home opener.

In the midst of a four-game homestand, the Spirit suffered their first loss of the season on April 27 against Sky Blue FC as Washington conceded goals in the second minute and 48th minute in a 2-1 loss.

Saturday's match marks Portland's first trip to the East Coast this season and is the first of two matches between the two clubs this season. The Spirit visit JELD-WEN Field on May 19.

Portland concludes its three-game road swing on Sunday, May 12, against the Chicago Red Stars at Benedictine Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. (Pacific). Thorns FC return to the Rose City on Thursday, May 16, against Sky Blue FC at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
