Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

A match-up of top organizational pitching prospects brought some national media attention to the Chattanooga Lookouts Thursday night. But the hangover from a heartbreaking road loss the day before seemed to be in evidence as the Lookouts never joined the battle with the visiting Jackson Generals.

Taijuan Walker, the Mariners' first-round pick in 2010, was as good as advertised, allowing only two hits over seven innings as the General won Monday's series opener, at AT&T Field before a crowd of 2,665. Walker was named the Mariners' top pitching prospect in 2011, before a sub-.500 performance in 2012 dimmed his prospect status ever so slightly.

Joining him in the marquee matchup was Dodgers' No. 2 overall prospect Zack Lee. But Lee, also a 2010 first-round pick, was less effective in suffering his first loss of 2013, allowing six runs (four earned, as his own throwing error compounded problems) over the first three innings. Lee (2-1) lasted just three innings, allowing six hits -- the most damaging being James Jones' second-inning triple -- meat in an extra-base hit sandwich that put three runs on the board for the Generals. Wasted was the best bullpen showings by the Lookouts in recent days, as Kyle Cofield and Luis Vasquez allowed only two hits over six relief innings.

The Lookouts' attack pretty much began and ended with first baseman J.T. Wise Thursday. Both in the second and the ninth, Wise doubled early in the inning and we picked up by C.J. Retherford and Gorman Erickson. Wise's big night raised his season's average to .320, moving him father up the Southern League list.

The five-game series continues tonight at 7:15 with Chris Reed (1-1, 3.13) on the mound for the Lookouts against Brett Shakin (1-1, 3.58).
