KODAK, Tenn. - Dallas Beeler fired seven scoreless innings and the Tennessee bullpen turned in two solid innings as the Smokies doubled up the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, 2-1, on Thursday night at Smokies Park to open the five-game series.
Beeler (2-2) scattered seven hits, walking one and striking out two in his seven scoreless innings. Zac Rosscup followed with a solid inning of his own before turning the ball over to Brian Schlitter, who retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his first save of the season.
Tennessee (12-9) scored a run in the second inning and never trailed. With two outs, Jonathan Mota walked and Rafael Lopez doubled him home to give the Smokies a 1-0 lead.
The Smokies added another run in the third inning when Ronald Torreyes tripled and two batters later, Jae-Hoon Ha singled to left field to give the Smokies a 2-0 edge.
Pensacola (9-11) plated a single run off Rosscup in the eighth when Ryan LaMarre doubled to start the inning and scored three batters later on a Rosscup wild pitch.
Pensacola starter Ryan Dennick (1-1) stayed with Beeler for most the night, but suffered the loss after allowing the two Smokies runs on five hits, walking two and fanning four.
Torreyes led the Smokies' offensive attack going 3-for-3 on the night, and was a home run shy of a cycle.
The Smokies and Blue Wahoos continue their five-game series on Friday night at 7:15 p.m. when Tennessee sends righty Alberto Cabrera (2-1, 4.63) to the mound while Pensacola counters with right-hander Daniel Renken (1-1, 3.57). Friday is Halloween Night at Smokies Park. Fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and stay for the another great postgame fireworks show.
