Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters signed outfielder C.J. Henry and pitcher Matt Barger on Wednesday.
Henry is a former first round pick of the New York Yankees in 2005. He played four seasons of professional baseball for the Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies organizations while also playing Division 1 college basketball for the University of Kansas in 2009.
"C.J. is a very athletic and talented player," said Otters manager Andy McCauley . "We will be looking for him to play in our outfield and possibly infield. He could be a middle of the lineup type hitter."
Barger pitched collegiately at the University of South Carolina Beaufort in 2012 and will be a rookie left- handed reliever for the Otters this year.
"Matt is a 6'7" lefty that should compete for a bullpen position," added McCauley. "He showed very well at a showcase that produces many Independent players."
He averaged more than a strikeout per inning pitched as senior and limited opponents to a .186 batting average . He will be looking to make his professional debut this season.
"I'm extremely honored to play for the Otters," said Banger. "I was overlooked a lot in college, but I am ready to come in to Evansville and prove my worth."
The Otters will be having an exhibition game that benefits Jacob's Village on Friday, May 10 against the Southern Illinois Miners . First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m. CDT at historic Bosse Field . Tickets are $4 for general admission or $6 for reserve seats. All ticket proceeds will go to local charity Jacob's Village. The Evansville Otters season starts on Friday, May 17 against the Normal CornBelters.
