EVERETT - Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, today announced the addition of Everett Silvertips goaltender Austin Lotz to Canada's National Men's Under-18 Team training camp roster. The training camp will be held to prepare Canada's entry in the 2013 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship in Sochi, Russia.
Lotz, 17, becomes the third goaltender and eighth WHL player among the 22 players named to Canada's training camp roster. The team departs for Russia on Wednesday and will play exhibition games against the United States and the Czech Republic before opening the World U18 Championship on Thursday, April 18 vs. Slovakia. Team Canada will be coached in the tournament by Vancouver Giants Head Coach Don Hay.
Hailing from St. Adolphe, Manitoba, Lotz recently completed his second WHL season and first as a starting netminder. In 42 games with the Silvertips this season, he posted a 15-19-3-1 record along with a .907 saves percentage, a 3.37 goals-against average and one shutout. Lotz stopped at least 40 shots on nine different occasions this season, including a franchise-record 65 saves in an overtime loss at Kamloops in January and a combined 98 saves on 103 shots in Everett's two first-round playoff wins over Portland.
Lotz competed for Team West at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2012 and tended goal for Team Manitoba in the 2011 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup.
