March 26, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

Shairon Martis tossed four shutout innings and Mark Sobolewski added three more hits as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Norfolk Tides, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex in Ft. Myers, Fla.

Martis, who pitched for the Netherlands in this year's World Baseball Classic, is in the running for a spot in the Red Wings rotation this season. He allowed just three hits while walking none and striking out three in his four innings of work.

The 26-year-old finished the 2012 season by making 10 starts for the Red Wings after being acquired from Pittsburgh in late July.

Another candidate for the Red Wings rotation, who also finished last season with Rochester, is Pedro Hernandez . The 23-year-old southpaw yielded just two hits in three shutout innings in relief on Tuesday to improve his cause.

For a second consecutive game, Sobolewski led the offense. After two hits, including a home run on Monday, the 2012 Eastern League All-Star added three more base knocks on Tuesday with an RBI.

Doug Bernier, who has spent three of the last four years with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, added two hits, an RBI and a stolen base for the Wings as he looks to solidify a spot in the Rochester infield in his first season in the organization.

Red Wings veteran Brian Dinkelman continued his hot play with a two-run double.

Anthony Slama yielded the lone run on the day in two innings of relief.

Rochester hosts Pawtucket on Wednesday afternoon looking to win two games in a row for the first time since March 14-15. The Red Wings are now 6-4-2 on the spring with just five days remaining until the team heads north on April 1.

Twins Notes:

The Twins announced today that they have reassigned right-handed pitchers P.J. Walters and Samuel Deduno to minor league camp. Walters is a likely candidate for the Red Wings starting rotation. Meanwhile, Deduno, who tweaked a groin muscle pitching for the Dominican Republic in the WBC championship game, could start the year on the Wings disabled list.

The Twins now have 29 active players in camp: 16 pitchers (2 non-roster), 2 catchers, 6 infielders and 5 outfielders (1 non-roster). The Twins also have two players on the disabled list: Scott Diamond (left elbow) and Anthony Swarzak (ribs).
