Portland Pirates News Release
Hartford, CT - The Portland Pirates, looking to make a quick turnaround from this weekend's games when they face off against the Whale tonight at the XL Center. The Pirates and the Connecticut Whale are dead locked at 3-3 in the season series. Puck drop is set for 7 PM for the 7th battle between the teams.
The Pirates are coming off back to back losses for the first time since January, falling to Worcester in a shootout on Saturday at home followed by a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the first place Providence Bruins. Jordan Martinook had the lone Pirates goal on Sunday, his 4th against the Bruins this season, and Mike Lee allowed 7 goals on 28 shots. The loss dropped the Pirates to 4 points back for the Atlantic Division lead, and puts them only 3 points ahead of the Hershey Bears for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.
Connecticut is 2-3 in their last 5 games and sits in the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference. Kris Newbury leads his team with 50 points and is also 7th in the entire league in scoring. Brandon Segal has also chipped in 32 points for the Whale, with 16 goals and 16 assists. Connecticut has won their last two games, including a 3-2 defeat over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday.
The last time these two teams faced off, Connecticut got the upper hand, scoring two goals in the first period and two in the third. Christian Thomas scored twice, while Brandon Mashinter and Kelsey Tessier accounted for the other two. Alexandre Bolduc netted the lone goal for the Pirates. The Pirates were heavily out penalized in this last visit to the XL Center, tallying up 52 penalty minutes compared to Connecticut's 28. The Whale has been victorious in the last three meetings between the two teams after the Pirates won the first three matchups.
The game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live. The pregame show starts at 6:40 with Jeff Mannix.
