St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Eric O'Dell notched four points but it didn't matter, as the St. John's IceCaps fell 5-4 to the Manchester Monarchs in a shootout Friday night at Mile One Centre.
Clinging to a 4-3 lead with less than a minute to go in regulation, Andy Andreoff scored his second of the game to send it to overtime and then to a shootout, where Martin Jones stopped four-of-five shooters and Jordan Weal and Colton Yellow Horn scored for Manchester.
For St. John's, O'Dell scored twice and added two assists and Kael Mouillierat recorded a goal and two assists, as well as the only IceCaps' goal in the shootout. Patrice Cormier had a goal and an assist while Eddie Pasquale made 22 saves in his first start since being returned by the Winnipeg Jets.
St. John's was unable to preserve leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in their 16th loss on home ice this season. The power play was effective for both teams, as St. John's went 3-for-6 while Manchester went 2-for-5.
After two unsuccessful power plays in the opening frame, the IceCaps converted on their third chance on a goal by Cormier. O'Dell took a pass from Mouillierat and made a great feed in front past a Monarchs defender to give Cormier an easy tap-in for the game's first tally.
The IceCaps opened up a two-goal lead early in the second period on O'Dell's team-leading 17th of the season. Aaron Gagnon made a terrific feed to a streaking O'Dell, who busted in on the right side and snapped a beautiful shot past Jones to make it 2-0.
Just 1:24 later, however, the Monarchs responded on a power play of their own. Manchester controlled the faceoff and David Kolomatis got the puck to Brandon Kozun, who stepped into a shot at the top of the left circle and beat Pasquale high to cut the lead in half.
The goals kept coming in the second as O'Dell notched his second of the game. Mouillierat made a great effort behind the Monarchs net to sweep the puck out front to a wide open O'Dell, who one-timed the feed and beat Jones low on the far side to restore the IceCaps' two-goal advantage.
The Monarchs got one back on a shorthanded marker by leading goal-scorer Tyler Toffoli. Ater a turnover at the Monarchs blueline, Toffoli took a pass from Linden Vey, sped past an IceCaps defender and raced in alone, beating Pasquale with a move to the forehand to make it 3-2.
St. John's again converted on a man advantage - their third power play marker of the night - at 14:21 of the second on Mouillierat's seventh of the season. O'Dell passed in front to Cormier, who patiently waited and fed a blind backhand feed to Mouillierat at the side of the goal. The Alberta native made no mistake in burying the puck into the yawning cage for a beautiful goal to give the home side a 4-2 lead.
The see-sawing continued with yet another power play tally, this time by the Monarchs. Andy Andreoff capitalized on another IceCaps turnover and beat a surprised Pasquale to bring the Monarchs to within one at 16:15 of the second.
The IceCaps appeared to be on their way to victory when Andreoff picked up his second of the game with just 42.9 seconds left in regulation time to crush the hopes of the faithful at Mile One. Andreoff was left uncovered in front of the IceCaps net and he banged home a rebound to even the score at four and send the game to overtime.
Neither team could end the game in the extra frame so a shootout was needed to decide the winner, where Weal and Yellow Horn provided the offence and Jones stopped four-of-five St. John's shooters.
The IceCaps and Monarchs square off again Saturday night for the fourth and final time at Mile One Centre this season. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. with the pregame show beginning at 7:00 (all times Newfoundland).
