LONDON, ONTARIO - They pushed the Knights the distance and then some. In their third meeting of the season on Friday Night, the Hounds were looking to dispell Anthony Stolarz and London's winning streak while extending their own.
In the first, and just as the Knights opening man advantage expired, Nikita Zadarov beat the Hounds defenseman to their net before cutting across the crease and tucking it past MATT MURRAY's right leg for a 1-0 lead.
The Hounds had two consecutive powerplays at the 6:45 and 8:44 marks of the period but failed to pull even.
But with less than five to go in the period, RYAN SPROUL sprung SERGEY TOLCHINSKY in alone on a breakaway, where the Moscow, Russia product tucked the puck five-hole on Stolarz and pulled the Hounds even through twenty minutes of play.
Within the opening seconds of the second period the two teams trading glorious opportunities as TYLER GAUDET pressed for the Hounds at one end, while it would be the Knights Alex Broadhurst at the other.
While on the Hounds 4th powerplay of the night, COLIN MILLER's left point shot got through on goal where DAVID BROLL had a second attempt before ANDREW FRITSCH followed the play up and fired home his 23rd goal of the season and now a 2-2 tie.
DARNELL NURSE would break up a 2-on-1 by sliding and forcing the puck to the corner with just over eleven minutes to play and the game still tied.
Two minutes later, Hounds and OHL leading scorer NICK COUSINS was assessed a five-minute major for a "check from behind" and a game misconduct after a hit on Knights defender Tommy Hughes. Hughes, was not injured on the play and didn't miss any time for the Hounds. Following some other minors involved during the Cousins penalty, the Knights eventually held a 1:40 advantage in which the Hounds would kill off the clock.
The two teams would trade of goals in the second half, and both came while skating 4-on-4. At the 11:21 mark, SERGEY TOLCHINSKY undressed a Knight, put the puck through his legs before sending a pass to MICHAEL SCHUMACHER who'd go gloveside on Stolarz for his 16th goal of the year.
Just over a minute later Chris Tierney was left alone standing to the right of Murray, and he would notch London's 3rd goal of the night to tie things up after two periods of play.
The best chance of the third period had to have come with 7:50 to go and while on the powerplay. MICHAEL SCHUMACHER was sent in alone on a breakaway but in the midst of a deke towards the London goal, the puck rolled away and no shot was ever taken.
Combining for 21 shots, eleven to London and ten to the Hounds, neither side could capitalize and we'd be forced to overtime.
The Hounds entered the extra frame with a 6-2 win-loss record in overtime games so far this year.
But midway through, Alex Broadhurst would redirect a Tommy Hughes point shot home for the Knights 4-3 win over the Hounds.
Following the overtime loss the Hounds record sits at 32-21-3-2, good for 69 points and 7th in the Western Conference. The locals will have an off day on Saturday before closing out the trip on Sunday afternoon at the Hersey Centre in Mississauga, home of the Steelheads. Puck drops at 2 p.m., and all the action on Rock 101 begins with the Bay Mills Resort & Casino's pre-game show at 1:30 p.m.
