Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Regina, SK. -- The Regina Pats kicked off a weekend home and home series with the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday night with a 3-2 victory.

Game two of the weekend set will be played Saturday night at 7:30pm at Brandon's Westman Communications Group Place.

Lane Scheidl scored twice, including the game winner with 2:32 remaining in the third period as the Pats snapped an 8-game losing streak and at the same time extended Brandon's to four straight losses.

16-year old rookie Jayce Hawryluk of Roblin scored both goals in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, whose record on the season slipped to 18-31-2-2.

"I thought we had possession time, I thought we were finding seams, I liked the way we moved around in the zone," said Brandon assistant coach David Anning on CKLQ's post-game show. "I thought once we let the puck do the moving and really worked harder at the top of the zone, it opened up some looks. We made a nice seam play in the goal."

While one 16-year old freshman was Brandon's only scorer at one end of the rink, it was another 16-year old - netminder Jordan Papirny - who made his Western Hockey League regular season debut at the other. A former first round bantam draft choice, Papirny stopped 21 Regina shots and Anning says he looked composed in the net.

"The one thing you'll get from Jordan, he's going to battle hard, he's going to fight to see pucks, he's going to fight for position in the net," said Anning. "I thought he was at the top of the crease all night, I thought he looked comfortable and confident...I thought he was fine tonight and did everything he could to give us a chance to win."

Saturday night's game is a presentation of Safe Communities Brandon and Area and will feature another Chuck-a-Puck, in support of Special Olympics Manitoba. In fact, in recognition of the provincial organization, several Wheat Kings including veterans Ryan Pulock, Jens Meilleur and Curtis Honey will be wearing special red skate laces during the game.

Tickets are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com. As well, Saturday is another Brandon Source for Sports - Subway Family Night. See store for details on the $48 Wheat Kings' Family Pack.
