Game Rewind
Wednesday, January 9th Vs Reading (Reading 4-Kalamazoo 1)
Kalamazoo, MI - Three goals in a span of 11 minutes in the first period doomed the Kalamazoo Wings (15-17-2-1), as the K-Wings lost 4-1 Wednesday night at Wings Stadium to the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Reading Royals (26-8-1-1).
Alex Berry (5th) gave the Royals the early lead with a hard wrister from the slot that beat K-Wings goaltender Joel Martin just 3:27 into the contest.
Scoring in similar fashion, Ethan Cox (4th) found room above the crease after a give-and-go with Kirk MacDonald midway in the period.
Just 42 seconds later, it was 3-0 Reading when David Marshall (10th) scored right off the draw after he took a pass from Yannick Tifu. Tifu's assist was his second of the period.
Registering for their lone goal in the infant stages of the third period, Tyler Shelast (3rd) put the K-Wings on the board with a one-timer that was setup by Alexandre Grenier, who was making his season-debut for Kalamazoo.
Kirk MacDonald (12th) reclaimed the three-goal cushion for the Royals late in regulation, when his slap shot went over the glove hand of Martin and caromed off the elbow of the crossbar and into the net.
Saturday, January 12th @ Gwinnett Gladiators (Gwinnett 4-Kalamazoo 2)
Gwinnett, GA - The Kalamazoo Wings started off a brief two-game road swing Saturday night with a 4-2 loss to the Gwinnett Gladiators at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.
A combined nine shots between the teams led to three goals in the opening period. Alex Belzile (4th) put the Gladiators ahead 1-0 scoring on a quick wrist shot that was setup from a cross-rink pass from Doug Jones 3:54 into the first period.
Brian Bicek (1st) pulled the K-Wings even 10 minutes later, when his left circle slap shot deflected off the shoulder of goaltender Mike Lee and flew just under the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1.
Responding less than two minutes later, Belzile (5th) notched his second goal of the game with a slap shot from the right circle to give the Gladiators a 2-1 advantage.
Immediately after coming out of the penalty box, Cody Carlson notched his second goal of the season 10:19 into the second period to extend the Gladiators lead to 3-1. While Carlson's initial shot was turned aside by Joel Martin, the rebound went right back to the forward, who lifted it over Martin.
Just 1:30 later, Joey Haddad (2nd) extended to the Gladiators lead to three goals, registering his second goal of the season off a power-play rebound. Gwinnett finished the game 1-for-3 on the power-play.
Going 1-for-9 on the power-play, Kalamazoo earned their lone man-advantage strike midway in the third period, when Jeff Pierce (1st) poked in an Alexandre Mallet rebound.
Sunday, January 13th @ Gwinnett Gladiators (Kalamazoo 4-Gwinnett 3-In a Shootout)
Gwinnett, GA - Earning a split of their two games with the Gwinnett Gladiators (25-12-1-1), the Kalamazoo Wings (16-18-2-1) outlasted the Gladiators 4-3 in a shootout Sunday night at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Racing the puck out of their zone, Doug Jones worked his way around the K-Wings defense and launched a blistering slap shot for his team-best 15th goal of the season 4:20 into the first period.
Prior to Sunday night, scoring first was a good omen for the Gladiators, as Gwinnett was 22-1-1-0 when registering the game's first goal.
A great individual effort helped the K-Wings even the game at 1-1 midway in the period, as John Armstrong was able to tightrope walk the blue line on his way to sneaking into the high slot for his fifth goal of the season.
A turnover to start a power-play cost the K-Wings late in the opening period, when Andy Brandt (7th) capped off an odd-man rush with a shorthanded marker to regain a single goal advantage for the Gladiators.
Battling back early in the second period, Nick Sirota (9th) recorded the equalizer for Kalamazoo, 3:34 into the stanza, with a one-timer created by a centering pass from Armstrong.
Sirota (10th) gave the K-Wings their first lead of the night 7:49 into the third period with an assist from Alexandre Grenier and Armstrong. Grenier, a third round NHL draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks, has earned points in all three games he has played with the K-Wings.
Using last minute heroics, Rylan Galiardi (11th) forced overtime with a power-play tally with 5.6 seconds remaining in regulation.
Settling matters in a marathon nine-man shootout, the K-Wings out-dueled the Gladiators 2-1 in the extra session with goals from Armstrong and the eventual game-winner from Sam Ftorek.
Joel Martin (14-15-2-1), who made 34 saves in regulation and overtime, stopped eight of nine shots he faced in the shootout. In six shootout appearances (5-1), Martin has stopped a league-best 30 of the 33 attempts (90.9%) he has faced.
