Tulsa Oilers News Release

TULSA, OK - On Wednesday night, several Tulsa Oilers players and Oilers Ice Girls volunteered their time to lend a helping hand at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.

The players and Ice Girls joined dozens of other volunteers from around the community to sort through thousands of canned goods and prepare boxes for donation to needy families throughout Green Country.

The volunteer effort, organized by 97.5 KMOD, a radio partner of the Oilers, was a success thanks to the generosity and giving spirit of all those involved.

"It was awesome to be a part of this," said Oilers forward Ben Gordon. "I know there are a lot of families who are hurting and trying to get by this time of year, so it's important for us to be able to take a couple of hours and play a part in helping them out."

The hundreds of boxes of food which were prepared on Wednesday night will be distributed to 450 Food Bank partner programs throughout 24 counties in Eastern Oklahoma. Those programs will then deliver the boxes to families or individuals in need of assistance. Through donations and the help of volunteers, the Food Bank is able to feed 70,000 people per week and serves 1.1 million meals per month.

The Oilers return to action Friday night in Wichita for a 7:05 p.m. face off against the Thunder. Tulsa is back home on Saturday to host Bloomington at 7:35 p.m. on Teddy Bear Toss Night at the BOK Center. All Oilers fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to the arena to throw on the ice after the Oilers score their first goal of the game. The animals will be collected and donated to the Salvation Army to ensure that children all over the Tulsa area have a very special holdiday season.

Tulsa Oilers Ian Keserich, Sean Erickson, Ben Gordon, and Drew Fisher are joined by Ice Girls Hannah, Desiree, Jessica, and Leila while volunteering at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma on Wednesday, December 6, 2012.
