Toronto Defeats Lake Erie 5-4

The Toronto Marlies defeated the Lake Erie Monsters, AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, by a score of 5-4 this afternoon from Ricoh Coliseum.

Toronto jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a powerplay goal from Jake Gardiner at 7:43 of the first period. Nazem Kadri would extend the Marlies lead with his third goal in as many games, at 18:25 of the opening frame. Lake Erie would cut Toronto's lead in half before the end of the period when David van der Gulik scored shorthanded with less than 15 seconds left on the clock. Both teams recorded 10 shots in the opening frame. Jake Gardiner and Andrew Agozzino exchanged goals to start the second period before Marlies captain Ryan Hamilton scored twice, giving Toronto a 5-2 lead. Monsters forward Bill Thomas notched his fifth goal of the season on the powerplay with just over five minutes remaining in the period. Mike Connolly's second goal of the season brought Lake Erie to within one at the 18:16 mark of the third period, however the Monsters were unable to equalize in the final minute.

Toronto returns to the ice next weekend for two games at Ricoh Coliseum. On Saturday, the Marlies will take on the Rochester Americans at 7 p.m. That game can also be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet ONE. Toronto will play host to North division rival Abbotsford on Sunday, with puck drop set for 3 p.m. Tickets for both games are still available and can be purchased by calling the team's ticket line at 416-597-PUCK (7825).
