Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa -Saturday's third-annual Pink the Rink, presented by Finley Hospital, grossed over $35,000 to help fight breast cancer and raise awareness about the disease that impacts one-in-eight women. Proceeds from the game and events throughout the evening, including a special post-game jersey auction, went to the Wendt Regional Cancer Center and the Mammogram Program at The Visiting Nurses Association to help those in need. The Fighting Saints defeated Cedar Rapids 3-2 on the ice, but the real victory was the amount of money raised towards the fight against breast cancer thanks to the generosity of the Dubuque community.
The post-game jersey auction alone raised $15,350 to help fight breast cancer, a new record for Fighting Saints jersey auctions since the team's return to Dubuque in 2010. The auction total nearly doubled the total from Pink the Rink in October 2011. The Fighting Saints wore special pink accented jerseys featuring a pink logo on the front of the uniform. Goaltender Arthur Brey's jersey went for the highest amount at $1,000 during the live auction. Team captain Shane Sooth's jersey raised $900 and forward Peter Quenneville's jersey brought in a bid of $800.
"This event continues to showcase the generosity of our community," said Fighting Saints President Dan Lehv. "We applaud our fans and business partners for stepping up in a big way for a terrific cause."
For the third straight year, Finley Hospital brought together numerous business partners to contribute to the event. Event sponsor Dubuque Bank & Trust provided all 2,847 fans with a pink rally towel. DB&T also pledged to donate $25 towards the cause for every Fighting Saints' shot on goal (32 during the game), and $500 for every Fighting Saints' goal (three scored) as well as another $100 for fans who landed on the DB&T mat during the post-game Chuck-A-Puck contest (one fan hit the mat), and $100 for every question answered correctly during a "Pink" intermission trivia contest (nine). At the end of the night, DB&T added an additional $1,300 in donations to bring their total to $5,000.
"Once again, the Dubuque Fighting Saints along with our friends at DB&T and many community participants, stepped up in a big way to support programs that treat breast cancer patients and provide early diagnosis," said Dan McCarthy of the Finley Health Foundation. "The image of 2,800-plus pink towels being waved in unison was a sight to behold."
A portion of the ticket sales from the evening went towards the cause and Kwik Stop/Dairy Queen also donated a wagon full of items themed with the color pink, and a $100 gas card. The wagon was auctioned off during the game and helped raise $750 for the Wendt Regional Cancer Center.
Fans could also make pledges to the Finley Health Foundation at the game, as a table was setup in the arena for fans to make donations to support the cause. The Mystique Community Ice Center was accented in pink for the event, with pink streamers and balloons displayed in the arena and many fans dressed up in pink to support the cause. The band Velkroe Sneker entertained the crowd after the game.
The Wendt Regional Cancer Center serves over 500 people each year and is known as a leader in cancer care. The Finley Health Foundation supports Finley Hospital through fundraising throughout the region, and The Foundation has benefited the battle against breast cancer by improving and adding to the technology at the Wendt Regional Cancer Center.
