DUBUQUE, Iowa - Behind two goals from Mike Szmatula, the Dubuque Fighting Saints defeated the Tri-City Storm 4-1 in the first game of the regular season for both teams on Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Arena in Dubuque
Trevor Moore scored the only goal of the night for the Storm, taking a pass from Garrett Gamez on a two-on-one rush and putting it past Dubuque goaltender Arthur Brey. Peter Halash started the play and was credited with the second assist on the goal.
Brey made 14 saves on 15 Storm shots. Christian Frey got the start in net for Tri-City and kept the Storm in the game until an empty net goal put it out of reach, making 25 saves on 28 shots.
After a scoreless first period, there were three goals scored in the first three minutes of the second. John Stevens got the first goal of the night 1:29 into the second frame. Moore responded to tie it at 1-1 just 12 seconds later, but Szmatula got his first goal of the night 18 seconds after Moore's and the Fighting Saints were in control for the rest of the game.
The Storm will now head to Illinois for their second game in as many nights on Saturday when they take on the Chicago Steel. Game time is at 7 p.m. Tri-City will have their home opener on Oct. 5 against Lincoln.
