Hawks Fire 57 Shots at Seattle But Fall 5-2 in Season Opener

The Portland Winterhawks (0-1-0-0) fired 57 shots at Seattle Friday in the season opener, but fell 5-2 to the Thunderbirds (1-0-0-0) in front of 8,174 fans at the Rose Garden.

The Winterhawks came out of the gates and dominated the first period, outshooting Seattle 30-2. But Seattle goalie Brandon Glover turned each of the 30 shots away as the game remained scoreless through the first period.

The Thunderbirds took a 4-0 lead in the second when they got goals from Tyler Alos, Luke Lockhart and two from Riley Sheen.

Seattle made it 5-0 when Alexander Delnov scored early in the third. The Hawks got on the board at the 1:46 mark when Oliver Bjorkstrand corralled a rebound in front of the net and fired it over Glover's shoulder to make it 5-1. Nic Petan then scored at the 17:13 mark of the third to make it 5-2, which ended up as the final score.

Petan and Troy Rutkowski each finished with two points for Portland.

The Hawks finished with a 57-27 advantage in shots on goal.

Before the game the Hawks took one last look back at their second straight conference title when they raised their 2012 Western Conference championship banner to the rafters.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they take on the Thunderbirds in Seattle at 7 p.m., and round out the weekend in Kennewick Sunday when they take on the Tri-City Americans at 5 p.m.
