San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes captain Ramiro Corrales has racked up his fair share of noteworthy accomplishments during a 14-year MLS career that includes 12 seasons in Northern California and now he can add a commemorative bobblehead to that list. The club announced on Tuesday that 5,000 Corrales bobbleheads, presented by Wells Fargo, will be given out at their Oct. 21 match against the LA Galaxy (4 p.m. PT / CSN California), making the longtime defender the sixth player to be immortalized with an iconic statuette.
In addition to the bobblehead giveaway, Wells Fargo will host a kickoff party featuring Corrales on Friday, Sept. 28 at a Wells Fargo store in Sunnyvale - 1241 S. Mary Ave. - from 4 to 7 p.m. Each person to open a checking account will receive an Earthquakes Fun Pack, which includes an autographed Corrales bobblehead and Earthquakes T-shirt. The event will also feature a local high school marching band, DJ, face painting and autograph signing.
Corrales is the last remaining active player to suit up during Major League Soccer's inaugural season in 1996. He joined San Jose in that first season after being traded from Columbus to the Clash on March 4, 1996. Corrales spent 12 of his 14 seasons in MLS with San Jose, including 1996-97, 2001-04 and 2008-present.
The versatile veteran is one of 20 players in MLS history to start 200 matches with a single club. He tops San Jose's all-time lists in games played (235), minutes played (19,125) and games started (215) and is tied for ninth in goals scored (14) and seventh in assists (28). Corrales has eight assists, second most on the team, and two goals in 2012. His pair of strikes came in a 4-0 rout of Chivas USA at home on Sept. 2, slotting in a pair of free kicks.
In addition to Corrales Bobblehead Day, Oct. 21 is also the groundbreaking date for the club's new stadium at 1125 Coleman Ave. in San Jose. The Quakes will aim to break a Guinness World Record for the largest groundbreaking ceremony, a mark that stands at 4,532 people digging for two consecutive minutes. Each participant will receive a commemorative shovel and their own spot in club history. For more details and to RSVP as a digger, visit www.sjearthquakes.com/groundbreaking.
