Houston Dynamo FC News Release
The Houston Dynamo moved alone atop Group 3 of the CONCACAF Champions League with a 4-0 win over C.D. FAS of El Salvador on Thursday night at BBVA Compass Stadium. Giles Barnes, Bobby Boswell, Cam Weaver and Calen Carr provided the goals as Houston moved to seven points (2-0-1) after three group games.
The Dynamo will meet C.D. Olimpia of Honduras in their final group stage game on Oct. 23 at BBVA Compass Stadium. A Houston win would ensure progression into the tournament quarterfinals, set for March 2013.
Barnes, making his Dynamo home debut after signing from English club Doncaster Rovers in August, delivered a supreme goal in the 22nd minute. The London native dribbled through the middle of the field before unleashing a cracking shot from 30 yards that crashed into the upper corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
A minute before halftime, Colin Clark sent a free kick to the edge of the six-yard box, and Boswell flicked a header into the side of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Four minutes into the second half, Weaver recovered a rebound from his own header and smashed a shot into the net to add to Houston's advantage.
Finally, Carr rounded out the scoring for the Dynamo in the 78th minute. Weaver headed the ball to Carr near the penalty spot and Carr used a clever chip past FAS goalkeeper Marvin Gonzalez for the final tally.
The Dynamo tied a franchise record for the largest margin of victory in international competition. Houston's previous largest win was a 5-1 victory of Arabe Unido in 2009.
It was Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric's first shutout in international competition.
The Dynamo return to Major League Soccer action on Sunday, when they visit the Philadelphia Union at 3 p.m. CT for an Eastern Conference matchup at PPL Park.
Next Match: Sunday, Sept. 23, 3 p.m. CT, Philadelphia Union vs. Houston Dynamo, PPL Park, Chester, Pa.
Next Home Match: Saturday, Sept. 29, 7:30 p.m. CT, Houston Dynamo vs. New England Revolution, BBVA Compass Stadium, Houston
