Matt Leads the Way

September 16, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL) Long Island Ducks

(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 16, 2012) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Camden Riversharks 5-0 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Long Island took the lead in the third on a RBI single to right by Timo Perez off Riversharks starter Kevin Reese. A three-run fifth inning ballooned the lead to 4-0. RBI singles from Kraig Binick and Bryant Nelson along with a RBI double by Ray Navarrete highlighted the offense.

Another run came home in the seventh inning on a RBI single to left by Navarrete to round out the scoring.

Matt Way (1-0) was dominant in his Ducks debut to earn the win. The southpaw tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out 13. Reese (4-9) took the loss, surrendering five runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work.

Binick, Navarrete and Brandon Sing paced the Flock with two hits apiece.

The Ducks hit the road on Tuesday for six games to wrap up the regular season, beginning with a three-game series against the Somerset Patriots. Long Island returns home for the playoffs on Friday, September 28 when they play Game Three of the Best-of-Five Liberty Division Championship Series. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza. Duck Tales: With 13 strikeouts, Matt Way set a new season-high for most strikeouts in a game by a Ducks pitcher. The previous high was 11, done by Nick Singleton on July 18 against Somerset. The 13 punchouts were also one shy of the franchise record of 14, accomplished by Mike Loree on September 15, 2011 at Southern Maryland...Ray Navarrete extended his team-lead in runs batted in with two on the day. He now has 86 on the season, which is good for third in the Atlantic League. He also picked up two hits to earn his team-high 35th two-hit game and 47th multi-hit contest...Kraig Binick was on base all three times he batted Sunday and scored three runs as well, finishing just one run shy of the most by a Ducks player this season. Navarrete scored four runs on June 2 in game one of a doubleheader against York...The Ducks finished the regular season with a record of 39-31 at Bethpage Ballpark. In 2011, the Ducks set a franchise record with 51 victories at home.
