Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- The Lake Monsters scored a season-high six runs in the top of the fifth inning, while Tyler Vail allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings and set a team record for a reliever with nine strikeouts as Vermont snapped a 13-game road losing streak with an 8-0 shutout victory over the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at LeLecheur Park.

The shutout was the second for Vermont in the last three games (9-0 over Connecticut Tuesday) after Lake Monster pitchers had not recorded a shutout over the first 67 games of the season. Starter Nolan Sanburn scattered four hits over the first three innings with four strikeouts, including back-to-back strikeouts with a runner on third to end the bottom of the third.  Sanburn also worked around a leadoff double in the first and back-to-back one-out singles in the second.

Vail (3-3) took over for Sanburn in the bottom of the fourth and walked the first batter he faced before retiring 11 batters in a row. The only hit allowed by Vail came with two outs in the seventh inning on a ball to shallow center that just fell between shortstop Daniel Robertson and centerfielder Brett Vertigan.  After the single, Vail retired the final seven Lowell batters in the game for his third win of season.

Vermont, which was shutout 6-0 by the Spinners on Wednesday, went scoreless with three hits over the first four innings before scoring the season-high six runs on six hits in the fifth inning. After a Robertson leadoff single, Miguel Marte walk and a sacrifice bunt, Kelvin Rojas and Austin Booker had back-to-back RBI singles to left for a 2-0 lead. Rojas then scored on a wild pitch and Booker scored the fourth run of the inning on a Brett Vertigan squeeze bunt.

The Lake Monsters got two more runs in the fifth on a RBI singles from Jacob Tanis and Robertson as Vermont sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.  Spinners reliever Tyler Wilson (5-1) was charged with the six runs in the fifth for his first loss in six decisions.   The Lake Monsters added two more runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Robertson and Marte.

Robertson, who had been in a 4-for-40 slump in the previous 11 games, went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Booker, Bostick and Renaldo Mateo added two hits apiece for Vermont, which  won its first road game in exactly a month since an 8-2 win at Aberdeen July 30th.

Vermont (28-42) returns to historic Centennial Field for a six-game homestand to end the season, beginning with the first of three games against the Stedler Divison champion Tri-City ValleyCats on Friday at 7:05 pm. It is Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger Night at the ballpark as each fan that brings a donation of at least one bag of non-perishable food items will receive one free general admission ticket to the game.
