Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - With a chance to pull their record for the season and their home record to an even .500 on the season's final home game, the Lowell Spinners fell short again in their fifth attempt at .500 came up short as the Vermont Lake Monsters rolled to victory Thursday night at LeLacheur Park, 8-0.
The loss left the Spinners two games under .500 (18-20) at LeLacheur Park on the season as the team concludes the season with six-games on the road in Connecticut and Brooklyn.
Scoreless through four, Vermont (29-41) broke through for six runs in the top half of the fifth inning against Tyler Wilson. Daniel Robertson led off the inning with single up the middle, advancing to second on a walk by Miguel Marte. A sacrifice bunt moved both men into scoring position and Kelvin Rojas got the Lake Monsters on the board with a single through the hole, giving Vermont a 1-0 lead. Austin Booker followed with an RBI single of his own and a wild pitch brought home Rojas to give the Lake Monsters a 3-0 lead. A suicide squeeze brought home another run and additional RBI singles by Chris Bostick and Robertson put the Spinners in a 6-0 hole they would not recover from.
The Spinners (34-36) never quite got going offensively, wasting a 2-for-3 night from Mike Miller, and Vermont added a pair of runs in the seventh, capitalizing on a three-base error by Kevin Heller to lead off the inning, expanding their lead to 8-0.
Outside of Miller, who added a double, the Spinners were held to just three additional hits, singles by Heller, Jake Davies and Kevin Mager.
Mike Augliera started and went the first three innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three. Wilson, aiming for his franchise record 11th win of his Spinner career, was knocked around. In 1.2 he allowed six runs on six hits and two walks without striking out a batter. Gerardo Olivares followed, allowing the two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk, striking out one in 2.1 of relief. Yunior Ortega pitched the game's final two innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, striking out five.
The Spinners head off to Connecticut where they kick off the season's final road trip with three against the Tigers. Pat Light gets the ball Friday night for a 7pm first pitch, with Raynel Velette to follow.
