Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa (8/20/12) - A day after an eighth inning comeback, the Burlington Bees (63-62, 31-25) suffered an eighth inning heartbreak that led to a 5-to-4 loss to the Kane County Cougars (63- 63, 29-27). The loss marked only the seventh time the Bees have lost a game after leading entering the eighth inning.
Chas Mye started the top of the eighth inning on the mound, but after six pitches - all balls - Bees' skipper Aaron Nieckula replaced Mye with Raul Alcantara in the middle of Daniel Mateo's at bat. Al- cantara inherited a 2-and-0 count and eventually allowed a walk.
In fact, three walks eventually led to a sticky situation with the bases loaded and only one out with Chris Elder stepping up to the plate. Elder smashed the first pitch for a grand slam that soared well over the right-field wall. The Bees trailed 5-to-3 after the top half of the eighth.
The club tried to come back in the bottom of eighth by loading the bases with only one out. Addison Russell scored on a sacrifice fly ball to left field by Aaron Shipman, but the Bees couldn't finish the comeback.
The Oakland Athletics' 2012 first round pick (11th overall) Addison Russell made his second start for the Bees in game three. The 18-year-old short stop earned his first hit with the Bees in the bottom of fifth and eventually went 1-for-3. Russell also drove in his first run after he hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field.
Max Muncy had a great game in the loss. Muncy went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Tanner Peters also looked brilliant on the mound, but didn't factor into the decision after the bull- pen blew the lead. Peters pitched 6.2 innings and allowed six hits and one unearned run. The righty didn't walk a batter and struck out five. Raul Alcantara (6-11) took a blown save and the loss.
The Bees have southpaw Chris Lamb (2-2) scheduled to start game four, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
