Daytona Tortugas News Release
The Daytona Cubs vs. Tampa Yankees doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, August 19th at 4:35p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark has been rained out after one completed inning of game one. Daytona scored a run in the first inning on a Rebel Ridling RBI single which plated Christian Villanueva, and had a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning before a large cluster of thunderstorms moved through Daytona. RHP Matt Loosen struck out the side in the top of the first. This is the final time the Cubs and Yankees are scheduled to play at Jackie Robinson Ballpark this season, but the two teams will meet for a three-game, two-day series beginning on Friday, August 24th. The series is two days because the game originally scheduled for Sunday, August 26th at George M. Steinbrenner Field was moved to a 3:00p.m. doubleheader on Friday, August 24th due to the Republican National Convention in Tampa. Officials from The Florida State League, Tampa Yankees, and Daytona Cubs will meet on Monday, August 20th to determine if and when the suspended game, and game two of the doubleheader will be made up.
All tickets for both Saturday's game and Sunday's game can be exchanged for any 2012 regular season Daytona Cubs game. The Cubs have one remaining seven-game homestand, which spans from Monday, August 27th through the final game of the season on Sunday, September 2nd. There will be fireworks at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on both Saturday, September 1st and Sunday, September 2nd.
The rainout continuous an ominous trend of Daytona Cubs game being affected by weather. Over the last 12 games, Daytona has been delayed twice, postponed four times, played two doubleheaders and cancelled four games (all at home), with just two of the 12 played as regularly scheduled nine-inning contests.
Daytona will be off on Monday, August 20th before heading to Clearwater on Tuesday, August 21st to begin a three-game series against the Threshers at Bright House Field.
