Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Cubs defeated the Redbirds 6-3 to extend their win streak to three games Sunday afternoon at Principal Park. With the victory, the I-Cubs have taken six straight from Memphis and have evened their season record within the division. Iowa's bats struck early for two three-run frames to start the game and never looked back. 3B Greg Rohan belted his third home run with Iowa and 19th on the year to lead the Cubs' offense.

In his triple-A debut, Yoanner Negrin tossed four innings of one-run ball on six hits. The Cuban import allowed two walks and struck out three. Memphis scratched their run against Negrin with a groundout sandwiched between two singles in the third. RH Ryan Searle hurled four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit to pick up the win in his Principal Park debut.

Iowa scored first for the second straight game, taking advantage of three first inning walks. Rohan (2-for-3, BB) won a nine-pitch battle with Gast, launching a three-run opposite field shot to put Iowa in front. The triple-A rookie now has 23 RBI in 17 games since his early August promotion. Rohan ripped a two-out double had gone ten games without an extra-base hit entering today's affair.

John Gast continued to struggle with his control in the second, walking three more I-Cubs after a Juan Apodaca leadoff single. Amezaga took a bases loaded walk and Dave Sappelt (1-for-2, BB) drove in Iowa's fifth run with a deep sacrifice fly to right for his 48th RBI of the season. Gast intentionally walked Rohan to re-load the bases and worked his way out of the game. Nick Greenwood came on in relief and allowed a Blake Lalli sac-fly before escaping Gast's bases loaded jam.

LH Scott Maine surrendered two runs, one earned in the ninth on two hits, two errors and a groundout to close out the game for his sixth save. Memphis manager Ron Warner was ejected after arguing a foul tip strikeout call with runners on the corners. Start John Gast suffered the loss.

Iowa looks to make it four straight tomorrow with a 7:05 p.m. start at Principal Park. Dueling southpaws will toe the rubber with LHP Chris Rusin (8-8) facing off against the Redbirds' LH Tyler Lyons (2-8). The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45 p.m. It's Social Media Night at the ballpark.
