Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
LOWELL, MA - The IronBirds dropped the series finale to the Spinners, 6-2, in a rain shortened contest on Friday night. With Joel Hutter at the plate in the eighth inning, the skies opened up in Lowell and the tarp was pulled on the field. After a 30-minute delay, the game was ruled official. In the losing effort, 3B Torsten Boss blasted his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
The Spinners struck first on Friday night in Lowell. SS Mike Miller led off the bottom of the first with a single to center. Miller stole second base and scored on a Dreily Guerrero RBI double. Lowell loaded the bases following the Guerrero double but RHP David Richardson got C Tim Roberson to ground out to short to end the frame.
Trailing by a run, the IronBirds quickly responded in the top of the second inning. 3B Torsten Boss led off the inning with a walk. Boss stole second and advanced to third on a Cameron Edman groundout to second. With two outs and Boss on third, LF Will Howard singled through the left side of infield to bring home Boss and tie the game at one.
Lowell regained the lead in the bottom of the second with an unearned run off David Richardson. For the second straight inning the Spinners left the bases loaded as 2B Mookie Betts flied out to centerfield to end the frame.
David Richardson exited after just 1.2 innings on the night. Richardson allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits over 1.2 innings of work. Richardson walked four and struck out three.
In the fourth inning, Torsten Boss tied the game up at two with his team-leading fifth home run of the season. However in the fifth inning, the Spinners plated four runs and took the lead for good. Facing Bennett Parry, Lowell registered six hits off the lefty and scored runs to take a 6-2 lead. In his first six outings as an IronBird, Parry allowed just two runs in 16.1 innings of work.
A four-run lead was plenty for RHP William Cuevas out of the Spinners' bullpen. Cuevas tossed 3.2 scoreless frames before the game was called due to rain in the top of the eighth inning.
Cuevas (6-2) picked up the win for the Spinners while Bennett Parry (0-1) got the loss.
The IronBirds continue their roadtrip on Saturday night against the Connecticut Tigers. LHP Jorge Rivera (0-1, 3.55) will take the hill for the Birds in the series opener while the Tigers will turn to RHP Charlie Gillies (0-3, 3.29). First pitch from Dodd Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network set to begin at 6:50 p.m.
