Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners got back on track, winning their 15th game in their last 18, earning a rain-shortened 6-2 victory over the Aberdeen IronBirds Friday night at LeLacheur Park.
The Spinners were leading 6-2 with one out and a 1-2 count on Joel Hutter when the rains became too much and umpires called for the tarp to come onto the field. After a 30 minute delay, the umpires made the decision to call the game, giving the Spinners a win. The game will not be concluded since the IronBirds leave town Friday evening.
Lowell (28-29) got on the board in the bottom half of the first inning as Mike Miller led off the game with a single and stole second. Dreily Guerrero came through with a one-out double, scoring Miller to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead. A walk to Mookie Betts and a third strike wild pitch to Aneury Tavarez loaded the bases with two outs, but Tim Roberson grounded to short to end the inning.
Aberdeen (24-33) evened the score at one in the top half of the second. Torsten Boss led off the inning with a walk, stealing second with one down. A groundout moved him to third and Will Howard came through with a two-out single to left, scoring Boss and knotting the score at one.
The Spinners took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Gedman led off the frame with a walk and after an out, Miller and Marrero each walked to load the bases. Guerrero struck out and the Spinners got on the board when Hutter missed the catch on an attempted force of Jake Davies that would have ended the inning. Instead, Gedman came around to score, giving the Spinners a 2-1 lead.
Aberdeen evened the score again in the fourth when Boss led off the inning with a home run to right, bringing the IronBirds even at 2-2.
Lowell put the game away however in the fifth inning with a prolonged rally. Davies doubled down the left-field line to lead off the inning, advancing to third on a single by Betts. After an Aneury Tavarez groundout, Roberson singled to left, scoring Davies and moving Betts to third. A wild pitch advanced Roberson to second, but Gedman's fly to center was too shallow to attempt to score Betts. The Spinners then strung together three consecutive two-out single from Zach Kapstein, Miller and Marrero, plating three to extend the lead to 6-2.
The IronBirds left two on in the sixth inning, but did not otherwise threaten, as the game to an end with one out in the eighth inning.
The Spinners have now won seven consecutive series as they begin another with the Hudson Valley Renegades, Saturday at Fenway Park for the seventh annual Futures at Fenway doubleheader. Brian Johnson (0-0, 0.00) gets the ball for the Spinners in Game One with Jacob Dahlstrand (4-2, 3.35) to follow before the Pawtucket Red Sox take on the Buffalo Bisons in Game Two.
