Mississippi Braves News Release

Jackson, TN - David Hale pitched a solid five innings of two-hit shutout baseball, and the Mississippi Braves provided just enough support to secure a 2-1 win on Wednesday night over the Jackson Generals.

Hale allowed just two base runners all night as at-bat after at-bat he carved up the Generals lineup for four strikeouts. It took him just 57 pitches - 40 of them strikes - to finish five innings, and at the end of his night he had faced just one man over the minimum.

Chris Jones picked up where Hale left off, striking out four over three innings of relief work before Cory Rasmus earned his fourth save of the season, striking out three in the ninth.

Meanwhile on the offensive side, the Braves (24-28; 54-68) weren't lighting up the scoreboard but got enough to get the win. The scoring started in the second when Evan Gattis reached on a single on James Gillheeney's first pitch of the inning. Two batters later, Phil Gosselin smacked a one-out double that one-hopped the wall, scoring Gattis.

The Braves doubled their lead in the sixth. Keenan Wiley and Joey Terdoslavich hit back-to-back singles to start the frame, and after Gattis grounded into a force at third, Joe Leonard came through with an RBI single, making it 2-0 Mississippi.

Hale earned the win, his seventh. Gillheeney took the loss, his first, after allowing two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

In the ninth, the Generals (27-25; 69-53) made things interesting. With two outs and Rasmus ahead in the count 1-2, Nate Tenbrink hit his seventh home run of the season over the right field wall. That made it 2-1 Braves, but a batter later Rasmus bounced back from a 3-0 count to strike out Stefen Romero looking to end the game.

The Braves now take a two-games-to-one series edge into Thursday night's game four, a 7:05 PM CT first pitch. JR Graham (1-0, 4.13) makes his sixth double-A start, taking on right-hander Brandon Maurer (8-2, 3.35). Fans can listen live on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com beginning at 6:30 PM CT with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch."
