
Cardinals Beat Hooks 5-2

Corpus Christi, TX - The Springfield Cardinals salvaged a victory in the final game of the three-game set in Corpus Christi as Oscar Taveras added two huge insurance runs in the 9th to cap a 5-2 win over the Hooks.
Springfield began the scoring in the 2nd as Jamie Romak launched a lead-off solo homer to deep left making it 1-0. Greg Garcia singled with one out and moved all the way to third on two wild pitches. Adam Melker drove him in with an infield single. Travis Tartamella singled to right to put runners on the corners. Richard Castillo laid down a perfect bunt to score Melker to put the Redbirds in front 3-0.
Richard Castillo navigated through a couple of rough innings to start without allowing a run, but his luck ran a bit thin in the 3rd. With two outs, Jon Singleton doubled, Jacob Goebbert singled and Austin Wates was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jay Fernandez then battled for eight pitches before drawing a walk to force in a run making it 3-1. Castillo struck out the next man to retire the side.
The Hooks had runners at first and third with no outs in the 5th and Jay Fernandez bounced into a double play allowing a run to score to put Corpus Christi within a run, 3-2. Castillo finished his outing after five innings allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Deryk Hooker gave the Cardinals a perfect 6th and Michael Blazek tossed a flawless 7th to keep the game at 3-2. Eric Fornataro pitched in a scoreless 8th allowing a pair of two out hits, but got Drew Locke to keep the Cardinals in front by a run.
In the 9th, Springfield added two insurance runs as Kolten Wong singled, stole second, moved to third on a fly out with two out and scored on a two-run rocket home run from Oscar Taveras off the foul pole in right to give the Cardinals a 5-2 lead.
Keith Butler pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to convert his league leading 24th save.
Springfield will return to Hammons Field Wednesday for a six-game homestand beginning with three against San Antonio. The Cardinals will have Kevin Siegrist on the mound against Adys Portillo of the Missions.
