Revs Suffer Bitter Ending In Opener At Long Island

The York Revolution led for the majority of the game, but lost their opener to the Long Island Ducks 5-4 in front of 5,327 fans at Bethpage Ballpark on Friday evening. Long Island scored twice in the bottom of the eighth for their only lead of the night. The Revs will look to even things on Saturday in Central Islip, NY.
York scored twice in the first inning on a two-out, two-run double into left-center by Chris Nowak, spotting themselves an early lead.
The Ducks answered back in the bottom of the first as Ray Navarrete lined an RBI double to left, cutting the Revs lead to 2-1.
Brandon Haveman stroked a two-out RBI single to right-center in the fourth, increasing York's lead to 3-1.
Revs starter Derrick Gordon cruised into the bottom of the fifth with the lead, but after a pair of walks, allowed a line drive down the left field line to Bryant Nelson that was ruled a ground-rule double, cutting the lead to 3-2. The ruling came after it was initially called a three-run homer, prompting Gordon to argue that the ball was foul, leading to his ejection. Navarrete followed with a sacrifice fly, tying things at 3-3.
Jeff Fiorentino crushed a solo homer to deep right with two outs in the seventh, putting York back ahead at 4-3.
Long Island mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth, however, as Navarrete was again front-and-center in the Ducks attack with a leadoff double to right field. Matt Esquivel then sacrificed pinch-runner Mitch Canham to third with one out. After a walk to Shawn Williams, Joash Brodin tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center. Williams then stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored when Kraig Binick legged out a two-out infield single.
Ducks reliever Jeremy Hill (4-3) earned the win after tossing a perfect eighth, while York reliever R.J. Rodriguez (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing the two eighth inning runs, one of which was unearned. Armando Benitez logged his first save for the Ducks with a scoreless ninth.
Long Island managed to win despite just six hits, as they took advantage of four walks, with each of those four scoring. Navarrete led their offense, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
York falls 4.0 games behind Lancaster for first place in the second half, while still leading the wild card race by 2.5 games. The Revs slip to 1-3 on their current road trip.
York will send Corey Thurman (10-3, 4.61) to the mound in Saturday's game against Bob Zimmermann (5-5, 4.56) at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350 and Shoutcast.com (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
