Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (AUG 6, 2012)-The Frisco RoughRiders are proud to announce that outfielder Engel Beltre (pronounced "Angel BELL-tray") has been named "Topps Texas League Player of the Month" for July. Beltre becomes the second member of the RoughRiders to win the award this season, joining Jurickson Profar who was named Topps Texas League Player of the Month for May.
Beltre, a 22-year-old outfielder from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, hit .308 in July with six home runs, six triples, four doubles, 15 runs batted in, and 25 runs scored. Over 28 games Beltre led the league in runs scored, stolen bases, and extra base hits (16). The TL All-Star also finished with 11 more total bases (71) then any player in the league. He finished with multiple hits in 12 games, and tied his season high for hits in a game (3) on three different occasions. In July, Beltre was named the Texas League's "Player of the Week" in back-to-back weeks (July 16-22 & July 23-29) becoming the third player in the league this season to receive the honor in consecutive weeks.
For the season, Beltre is batting .259 with 12 home runs (a career-high), 12 doubles, 16 triples, 43 RBI, and 67 runs scored. He leads the Texas League in triples, and is tied for the lead in minor league baseball in the category; he is also the RoughRiders' all-time leader in three-baggers with 26. He is third in the TL in steals (31), fourth in hits (116), fifth in runs scored (67), and first in at bats (459).
Over the last 20 games, Beltre is batting .369 (31 for 84) with four doubles, five triples, five home runs, nine RBI, 20 runs scored and six steals. The recent tear has raised Beltre's average 20 points. His steal on Saturday night gave him 56 for his RoughRiders career, the second-most in Frisco team history (only Craig Gentry had more with 65, a number that is still reachable for Beltre this season).
Beltre was acquired by Texas in 2007 in a trade with the Boston Red Sox. In the deal, Beltre, outfielder David Murphy and pitcher Kason Gabbard were dealt to the Rangers in exchange for Eric Gagne. He signed with the Red Sox on July 2, 2006 as an amateur free agent.
The 'Riders return to Frisco on August 15 for a six-game homestand against the Tulsa Drillers and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. For ticket information, please call (972) 731-9200 or check out the tickets page on www.ridersbaseball.com.
